The Iris (eye-of-heaven) is an ancient flower whose symbolism is embedded in Egyptian, Greek and Roman mythology and the history of European monarchies. The three petals of the Iris represent valor, wisdom and faith and have been allied with the forces of political and religious power since the 5th century in the form of the Fleur de Lis symbol, a stylized Iris flower. The Greeks named the flower after the messenger goddess, Iris who traveled on the arcs of rainbows and guided the souls of women to the Elysian Fields.
