Falling Water opened in the summer of 1988 in an old Victorian house on the west side of downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. The creative ideas, resources and physical effort of Kay Gould-Caskey, Jim Johnston, Esther Frank, Phyllis Martin, Grace Forrest and a cadre of family and dear friends all helped to create a store from scratch. Starting with books, fossils, a bit of jewelry, music and handcrafted dolls, we soon outgrew our space and in the summer of 1989 we moved to our present location on Main Street. We are known for our large and varied selection of greeting cards, beautiful jewelry, and unique fair trade gifts from around the world and our friendly and helpful staff.

Falling Water, at its core, is a retail business based on the principle of integrity. We have chosen to reflect this principle in three ways. First, our merchandise is carefully selected for both its aesthetic qualities and workmanship. We constantly search for items that reflect a celebration of the human spirit, the Earth, and all of its inhabitants. Second, we believe that every transaction is an opportunity to demonstrate our respect and gratitude toward our customers through an emphasis on personalized attention. The same level of respect is shown for everyone who is involved in the operation of the store, from our vendors to our staff. Third, we believe it is critical for Falling Water Books & Collectables to be a positive member of our community. Toward that end we contribute time and resources to many local and global nonprofit organizations every year.

Over the years the store has become its own entity, and an interwoven part of the community. Not a week goes by without someone telling us how much they appreciate its presence. And we are deeply grateful, for we love this store, and the people we have encountered through it.
